Villa Mandarinas Weddings: Puerto Vallarta’s Most Spectacular Private Large-Group Wedding Venue

Some wedding venues are beautiful. Villa Mandarinas is in a different category entirely.

Sixteen bedrooms. Three event terraces. A private ocean dock. A freshly completed expansion that renovated the property into two fully equipped houses sharing the same panoramic hillside above the Bay of Banderas. If you’re planning a wedding with a large guest count, two families who both want to stay on-site, or simply a group that wants to experience Puerto Vallarta at a scale most visitors never encounter, Villa Mandarinas is worth serious consideration.

It is the largest private wedding venue we work with. It is also, in our experience, one of the most memorable.

The Location

Villa Mandarinas sits just south of Mismaloya, on the hillside above the southern shore of Banderas Bay — approximately 20 minutes from the Zona Romántica by car. The surrounding area is quieter than the main tourist zones, with a distinctly wild and natural character that makes the views from the property feel genuinely remote even though the city is close.

The location also works to your guests’ advantage in a different way. The villa sits near the pier at Boca de Tomatán, where boats depart regularly for the remote villages along the south shore — Yelapa, Quimixto, Majahuitas — as well as snorkeling at Los Arcos. The villa has its own private dock, meaning boats can come directly to the property to pick up your group for day trips. The Vallarta Botanical Garden, one of the finest half-day excursions in the region, is also just minutes away.

For guests not staying at the villa, there are several nearby villas and two large resorts available for overflow accommodations. The villa’s owner also owns a nearby property, whose guests are welcome to join yours for meals each day, which is a notable benefit for larger wedding groups that need accommodation beyond the villa’s sixteen bedrooms.

Ground transportation is readily available through the villa’s staff, who can arrange taxis and ride-share vehicles on request.

The Villa

Villa Mandarinas was originally designed by renowned Mexican architect Alberto Álvarez in the tradition of Luis Barragán, the modernist master known for bold solid color, clean geometry, and the integration of architecture with natural landscape. The villa’s signature mandarin orange exterior, visible from boats on the bay far below, is one of the most recognizable facades on the southern shore.

The 2026 expansion transformed the property into two separate but connected houses, each with eight bedrooms, an expansive living and dining room, a full kitchen, and its own outdoor pool and jacuzzi area. The expansion also added a new sauna and gym facility overlooking the ocean — a detail that most luxury resort guests pay handsomely for and that your group has entirely to themselves.

Each of the sixteen suites has a signature color expressed throughout its décor. All feature private outdoor terraces, large closets, and substantial bathrooms, many of which are built directly into the hillside rock. Most suites have king beds; several offer two queen beds for guests sharing a room, and one suite accommodates four individual beds, making it ideal for solo travelers or guests who prefer their own sleeping space.

The views from the property are exceptional at every level — a full panoramic sweep of Banderas Bay that becomes one of the premier whale-watching vantage points in the region during the winter migration season.

The Owners and Staff

Bruce and Barbara Madden of San Diego are the owners responsible for the 2026 expansion and renovation. The full-time staff numbers twelve: two chefs, a house manager, a guest concierge, and a dedicated team of house staff and gardeners. Someone from the team is always on-site during your group’s stay. The hospitality standard here, in our experience, is among the highest of any private villa we work with. And the creativity and attention to detail in the decoration and furnishings truly accomplishes understated luxury.

The Event Terraces

Villa Mandarinas has three distinct event spaces, and using all three in sequence is what creates the distinctive event flow that makes weddings here feel so well-designed.

The Ocean Terrace

The lowest level of the property, opening directly onto the private dock. Most couples choose this terrace for their ceremony — the panoramic bay view is at its most expansive here, and the terrace’s freshly paved surface accommodates up to 150 chairs arranged in any orientation to suit your specific ceremony setup. A small palapa bar just off the terrace makes it a natural spot for cocktails immediately following the ceremony, before guests move upward through the property for dinner.

The Pool Terrace

Set two levels above the Ocean Terrace, the pool terrace serves as the bar, lounge, and dancing space following dinner. The large built-in pool and surrounding lounge area create exactly the right energy for the later part of the evening. It is technically possible to cover the pool surface for additional event space, but since this takes the pool out of use for villa guests in the days surrounding the wedding, we generally advise against it unless that additional space is genuinely necessary.

The Garden Terrace

One sweeping staircase up from the Pool Terrace, this is the main banquet space — a long, grassy area interspersed with concrete platforms and walkways that adapt naturally to both traditional seated banquets and more relaxed lounge-style arrangements. We’ve used this terrace for formal dinners and for beautiful, informal evening setups; it handles both equally well. Couples who prefer a more natural, garden feel for their ceremony can also hold it here rather than on the oceanfront below.

Together, the three terraces give couples something unusual: a natural architectural progression through the property over the course of the evening, with each space offering a distinct character and view. Guests move from ceremony to dinner to dancing through an environment that keeps surprising them — which, in our experience, is one of the things they remember most.

Things to Know Before You Book

The stairs. The property descends seven flights from the entrance to the Ocean Terrace, with no elevator access. For guests with significant mobility limitations or who use wheelchairs, this requires advance planning and in some cases additional staffing for assistance. We’ve managed this successfully before, but it needs to be a conversation, not a surprise.

Bedroom flexibility. The villa can be booked with a minimum of nine bedrooms rather than all sixteen. However, the overall rental pricing remains the same regardless of how many bedrooms you occupy. Financially, filling all sixteen bedrooms is almost always the better value. And for a wedding group, it’s usually the more enjoyable experience too.
